2024 Heroes Hunt

The 2024 HEROES HUNT is scheduled for Saturday October 5, 2024 all current and retired law enforcement and first responders. 2024 marks the 10th annual event at Highland Hideaway Hunting in Riverside! Thanks to Kinetic Dog Food and Highland Hunting for hosting and volunteers from Linn County Pheasants Forever for assistance with registration.
- In order to conduct this full day event we are seeking sponsors. (see contact info below)
- This Heroes Hunt registration is open to first responders and law enforcement officers (LEOs) (current or retired).
- PLEASE NOTE this event will be a FULL DAY event - stay tuned for event details! You won't want to miss the fun!
Those participating in the hunt will be assisted by professional guides with their gundogs. No personal gundogs will be permitted in the field. All participants will be treated to a Highland Hideaway lunch and have an opportunity to win raffle prizes that support Linn County Pheasants Forever habitat projects. All hunters must be able to walk in tall grass over a rough terrain. All selected participants will be required to possess a valid Iowa hunting license and be a current member of Pheasants Forever. A Pheasants Forever annual membership costs only $35 and includes a member card, window decal and five issue subscription to the Pheasants Forever Journal magazine. (Licenses and the Pheasants Forever memberships can be purchased at Highland Hunting the day of the event.) Hunters must provide their own shotgun and it is required that you wear blaze orange and eye protection. Ammunition will be provided and distributed by your field guide.

- The 2022 Linn County Pheasants Forever HEROES HUNT took place for all current and retired law enforcement. This 8th annual event was hosted by Iowa's Linn County Pheasants Forever Chapter #45 and took place on Sunday, October 9 2022 at Highland Hideaway Hunting in Riverside!
- This Heroes Hunt registration is open only to law enforcement officers (LEOs) (current or retired).

The VETERAN'S HEROES HUNT is hosted by Iowa's Linn County Pheasants Forever Chapter #45 will take place on Sunday, October 17 at Highland Hideaway Hunting in Riverside!

Pass it On! Outdoor Mentors Collaboration

In January 2021 Linn County Pheasants Forever provided hats to young adult hunters as they were hosted by Corridor Outdoor Adventures
at Highland Hideaway Hunting who were learning to hunt pheasants. During the hosting of two events, seven people attended the event with Johnson County Conservation serving as safety officers, Highland Hideaway Guides Steve Ries and Chewy Garcia. Check out Corridor Outdoor Adventures - Non-Profit Organization in the corridor between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, Iowa for further info on the event.
LinnCoPF Tree Display at 2019 Cedar Rapids Festival of Trees

Take a stroll through our Winter Wonderland at the 2019 Festival of Trees. Come see the Pheasants Forever sponsored tree which was decorated by the Corridor Clay Crushers Collegiate shooting sports team and local shooting sports student athletes.
This event is hosted by the Cedar Rapids JayCees which features decorated holiday trees and festive displays as well as a Holiday Market. There will be a special treat for youth attendees will be able to stop into Santa's Workshop for a snack, a holiday craft and an opportunity to snap a selfie with the big guy himself. Adults won't go home empty handed either. Our Holiday Market will feature several businesses offering cash and carry items and samples of their holiday goods and products. What a great way to support our local community.

Women in the Outdoors Workshop

Beyond BOW - Upland Bird Hunting
Join Becoming an Outdoors Woman, Iowa County and Linn County Pheasants Forever Chapters, and the Iowa DNR their Upland Bird Hunt Weekend on November 9th and 10th in Homestead, IA. The event centers around the habitat, the hunt, and the harvest.
Hunters will gather Saturday morning to begin learning about pheasant and other upland bird habitat and how they're biology impacts hunting tactics for a successful hunt. The afternoon will focus on firearms, clothing and other necessary equipment and wrap up with shooting practice and a "mock hunt". Saturday evening will include lessons on hunting dogs and how to get started training them.
Sunday morning will feature the hunt and upon return, instructors will be on hand to demonstrate how to field dress and share their favorite recipes and crafts using pheasant feathers.
Please note:
This is an active, skills-based event. Come prepared to get muddy, and dressed for the variable fall weather. We will do quite a bit of walking on varying terrain! Shotguns, ammunition, and orange vests will be provided, but participants may also bring their own equipment.
We have 20 gauge shotguns available for check out, if you'd like to use one, please make sure to note this in the registration.
All participants are required to complete hunter education prior to attending. Visit www.iowadnr.gov/huntered to check out the various ways you can complete the course or to locate a class in your area.
Participants are required to purchase an Iowa hunting license and habitat stamp prior to attending. You can purchase online or to locate a retailer in your area.

3rd Annual Pheasants Forever Collegiate Trap Tourney (2019 Spring Hosted Dual)
Come out and support our Pheasants Forever #45 hosted collegiate trapshooting tournament & the local college team: Corridor Clay Crushers!
Student athletes from Kirkwood College, Mount Mercy University, and Wartburg College make up the Corridor Clay Crushers will be competing in a dual against Hawkeye Community College at this meet.
Come on out and cheer on this local collegiate shooting sports team!
Women in the Outdoors Workshop

Linn County PF is hosting a workshop for women in the outdoors with co-hosts: North Linn Fish and Game and Black Dog Guns & Ammo. During this event we will have women sharing knowledge with women with firearm safety, cleaning and handling. During this seminar attendees will have the opportunity shoot a .22 cal, various shotguns, archery and rifle. We are working to keep this event free to the attendees. 2019 Wild Game Feast at Faith Bible Church (Cedar Rapids)

Faith Bible Church's 20th Annual Wild Game Feast

Join us for a day of outdoor sports related exhibits, informative and entertaining seminars. And of course, the buffet style lunch with an array of home cooked wild game dishes followed by some great tasting desserts! Come early and get donuts and coffee in the morning.
There will be a keynote spiritual message followed by the drawing of several grand prizes.

Iowa State Pheasants Forever Convention

Join volunteers and professionals from across the state to celebrate our accomplishments, network, learn new fundraising strategies, and get updates from our national staff and partners about our latest initiatives and programs!
Friday night will be the hunter's social, an evening to share hunting stories and strategies with fellow upland hunters and speak with upland hunting gear vendors and partners from across the country! Come on January 25th to see/hear Linn County PF's board member from 1982, Forrest Kramer be inducted into the State of Iowa Pheasants Forever Hall of Fame for lifetime achievements with Pheasants Forever! Also the night will conduct chapter and partner awards as well as conservation faces of Iowa landowner awards. Linn County is excited to have Forrest Kramer as an instrumental person in our organization!
Saturday will feature national program updates, keynote speakers, breakout sessions featuring Linn County Pheasants Forever's Tina Elwood Gehrke along with North Polk and Iowa Counties. The three PF Chapters will share activities that they have in their communities for habitat, outreach and education. Saturday night will feature the Iowa PF/QF State Council fundraising banquet!
Nick Larson is the host and creator of the Project Upland podcast. He lives with his wife, son and English setter in Duluth, Minnesota where he avidly pursues the outdoors with a passion. He spends most of his time hunting, or at least thinking about hunting, grouse and woodcock in the northern forests of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
When he's not upland bird hunting, he truly enjoys spending time at the cabin, reading outdoor literature and continually studying his pursuits. He also enjoys sharing his passions with others as well as interviewing and connecting with those that are deeply immersed into the outdoor lifestyle.

Take a stroll through our Winter Wonderland at the 2018 Festival of Trees. Come see the Pheasants Forever sponsored tree which was decorated by the Corridor Clay Crushers Collegiate shooting sports team and local shooting sports student athletes.
This event is hosted by the Cedar Rapids JayCees which features decorated holiday trees and festive displays as well as a Holiday Market. There will be a special treat for youth attendees will be able to stop into Santa's Workshop for a snack, a holiday craft and an opportunity to snap a selfie with the big guy himself. Adults won't go home empty handed either. Our Holiday Market will feature several businesses offering cash and carry items and samples of their holiday goods and products. What a great way to support our local community.

The VETERAN'S HEROES HUNT is hosted by Iowa's Linn County Pheasants Forever Chapter #45. The 2018 Heroes Hunt is scheduled for Sunday, October 21. The 5th Annual Heroes Hunt will take place at the Highland Hideaway Hunting in Riverside, Iowa.
Applications can be processed in two ways: 1. online or 2. by printing and submitting via email or mail.
The two application methods can be accessed through this event page. The online version (link is here & below) or by using the printed application (attachment is in this event titled "2018 Heroes Hunt Registration (please print form & send to host)".
The 2018 is closed. If interested in 2019, please "contact us" through this website.
Applications for participants are selected on a first-come first-serve basis. Due to having a limited number of 60 participant slots, we ask that this application form be submitted as soon as possible, the application process will end the first Friday of October (October 5, 2018) (and registration is now closed for 2018).
At the 2018 event, we have planned to host 60 veterans who will spend one-half day in the field hunting pheasants with professional guides and elite gun dogs. All participants will be treated to a Highland Hideaway lunch and have an opportunity to win raffle prizes that support Linn County Pheasants Forever habitat projects in Linn County. To be selected for the hunt all participants must be a veteran. Selected hunt participants are required to possess a valid Iowa hunting license and be a current member of Pheasants Forever. A Pheasants Forever one year membership includes member card, window decal and five issue subscription to the Pheasants Forever Journal magazine at a cost of only $35.00. (Licenses and the Pheasants Forever memberships can be purchased at Highland Hunting the day of the event.) Veterans/Hunters must provide their own shotgun and wear appropriate blaze orange hunting clothing. Ammunition will be provided and distributed by your field guide.
Participants will have lunch the day of their hunt and have an opportunity at raffle prizes that support Linn County Pheasants Forever habitat, outreach and education projects in and around Linn County. All participants must be veterans. Licenses and Pheasants Forever memberships can be purchased the day of the event.

We feel it is important to offer this event free of charge to our veterans. In order for this event to continue in this manner, we are seeking sponsors to assist with the costs that are incurred. We are offering levels of sponsorship, by banding birds. During each hunting session, several pheasants will be placed in fields with leg bands. The veterans who are fortunate to harvest a pheasant with a band becomes eligible to be entered into a drawing for a shotgun. If you or someone you know is interested in being a sponsor, please let us know. The following levels cover the cost of veterans:

Iowa Youth Trapshooting Championships This Week in Cedar Falls

Good luck this week and weekend to the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Trap and Cedar Rapids Prairie Trap Teams who will compete in the Iowa Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) State Trapshooting Tourney in Cedar Falls. This week will focus on trapshooting singles, doubles and handicap. The following two weekends will be skeet and sporting clays at other venues. #IowaSCTP #IowaDNR #SSSF #SCTP
Starting Wednesday, June 6th the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Iowa State Trapshooting Association (ISTA) will be hosting the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) state trapshooting championship event at the ISTA home grounds just north of Cedar Falls.
Middle school and elementary aged athletes will begin the competition on Wednesday with high school athletes competing Thursday through Sunday. Over 630,000 clay targets will be fired at during the five days of competition with 2,639 youth from 117 Iowa teams scheduled to participate.
This week’s trap championship event is the first culminating event to a season of trap, skeet and sporting clays competitions that started last fall where Iowa teams logged 800 competition events from September 1 through the end of May. Iowa youth have fired at nearly 1.7 million clay targets in these local competitions alone.

Become a Women in the Outdoors - 2018

Important Registration Information - Please Read
Workshop fees include instruction in all sessions, program materials, use of demonstration equipment, t-shirt, session takeaways, meals and lodging. The workshop is being held at Honey Creek State Resort in Moravia, IA. Lodging is available in modern cabins with shared bathrooms for 3-5 occupants or in hotel rooms for 1-2 occupants.
Participants are welcome to make their own lodging arrangements through the DNR Park Reservation System to reserve a camping spot at Honey Creek Resort.
Registration is complete upon receipt of your registration, payment and your medical form. You will get a confirmation email upon successful registration. Thirty days prior to the workshop, participants will receive an email with a check list of what to bring, a pre-event survey, and map to Honey Creek State Resort.
Cancellation deadline is March 23, 2018. Cancellations on or before March 23, 2018 will receive a full refund. After that date, no refund will be provided. You may send a substitute in your place.

Jefferson High School Trap team is hosting a middle school and high school trap tournament in Cedar Rapids at Otter Creek on April 14, 2018. The Linn County Pheasants Forever supports this team in 2018 and recommends that you attend this event as a spectator. Schools invited to this event include (and is not limited to): CR Jefferson, CR Kennedy, CR Xavier and ~15 other middle school and high school teams. Generally at an event of this nature there is more than 150 student athletes in attendance. There are nearly 4,000 students across the state of Iowa participating in high school shooting sports.

Faith Bible Church Wild Game Feed will take place Feb 3, 2018. This is an annual event that Linn County Pheasants Forever is involved with in the Linn County community.
The Wild Game Feast in early February in Cedar Rapids, allows 400 regulars and guests of Faith Bible to share a meal of wild game. In addition to the sometimes exotic cuisine, the Wild Game Feast includes educational sharing on outdoor sports— everything from bird-dog training to wildlife photography. Those including friends and neighbors through the Wild Game Feast know the shared experience will create additional opportunities to talk about their faith in Jesus.

About the Event
This is a 2-part Hunter Education Course. To receive a certificate students must attend the classroom portion January 13, and the Field Day January 14. On January 13 lunch, snacks, and drinks will be provided by the Linn County Pheasants Forever. Students should bring a pencil to the class. Class is conducted at 1535 Main St, Ely, IA 52227 (location: American Legion Post 555 (the St. Quentin Post))
Overview
Hunter education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several life-long skills that are important to many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, and the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws, and firearm/archery safety. Hunter education also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics.
Iowa law requires that anyone born after January 1, 1972 must be certified in hunter education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license.
Typically there is no charge for the course, unless lunch is furnished or room rental is required. If a charge is required for the items mentioned previously, the class will indicate the amount to be charged in the special instructions section prior to completing the class registration process. All charges must be paid upon arrival to the class in the form of cash or check.
About the Class
Hunter Education Classroom courses are offered by knowledgeable and certified volunteer instructors and Iowa Conservation Officers.
Classroom courses are typically 12-15 hours in length and are held over 2 to 3 sessions (days). In order to receive certification, a student must attend all sessions (days) and pass the final exam.
Age-Related Information
We do not prevent attendance based on age; however:
- Any child under 11 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during every session.
- A person who is 11 years old or older may enroll in a course, but those who are 11 and successfully complete the course shall be issued a certificate which becomes valid on that person's 12th birthday.

The Linn County Pheasants Forever pairs up with the Ely American Legion Basic Marksmanship Coaches to host a hunter's education class with facilitator Charlie Bray from Johnson County Conservation.
Guest speakers and instructors will come from several county and state agencies.
The Iowa DNR Hunter Education class will be offered at the American Legion Post 555 on January 6&7 in Ely.

Pheasants Forever Tree Display at the Cedar Rapids Festival of Trees

Take a stroll through our Winter Wonderland at the 2017 Festival of Trees. Come see the Pheasants Forever sponsored tree which was decorated by the Corridor Clay Crushers Collegiate shooting sports team.
This event is hosted by the Cedar Rapids JayCees which features decorated holiday trees and festive displays as well as a Holiday Market. There will be a special treat for youth attendees will be able to stop into Santa's Workshop for a snack, a holiday craft and an opportunity to snap a selfie with the big guy himself. Adults won't go home empty handed either. Our Holiday Market will feature several businesses offering cash and carry items and samples of their holiday goods and products. What a great way to support our local community.

2017 Heroes Hunt for Veterans

Thanks to those who helped make the event a success: Sponsors, volunteers, veterans. We were able to facilitate pheasants hunts for over 80 veterans on October 8, 2017.
We look forward to planning our event for October of 2018.

On August 22, 2016, the Linn County Pheasant Forever partnered with several local organizations including Hawkeye area Boy Scouts, Kirkwood Community College Conservation Club, PF Chapter members (Kyle and Chris Robinson, Jeff Pitlik, Dennis Goemaat, Forrest Kramer) for tree planting project at Linn County Conservation's Squaw Creek Park with a special Savanna Grassland Tree Planting Project. Registration for Iowa DNR Hunter Education Classes
While we all like to have fun in the field and chase pheasants for miles, safety is one of the most important aspects. We promote and encourage hunter safety in the field.
Hunter education classes show both youth and adults the proper way to hold, maneuver and practice proper gun care. We at Iowa believe it is essential for kids to become familiar with gun operation and be comfortable with handling their firearm.

Annual Heroes Hunt
Each year Linn County Chapter #45 gives back to those service or law enforcement officer men and women by showcasing a Heroes Hunt. Our chapter has a mission to give to those who defend our freedom so that we are ability to hunt, fish, and enjoy the outdoors! Annually out chapter hosts a pheasant hunt where we provide a hunt, shells, pheasants, guide dogs & handlers, clay birds, and etc. Annually, our event is in October. If you are interested in attending, please complete your registration form as soon as possible as we are limited to the numbers that we can host. In 2022, we are backing the blue. If you are a law enforcement, we welcome you to this event. Thank you for your service! You don't want to miss out on this event, plus the raffles and outstanding lunch that we will be providing! We look forward to hearing from you!
Shooting Sports
The Linn County Pheasants Forever assists a local collegiate shooting sports team with hosting a collegiate 16 yard trap shoot in Cedar Rapids in the month of October. The student athletes on this team volunteer for at least five Pheasants Forever events during the year to maintain this partnership.
Habitat Initatives
Linn County PF believes in enhancing our environment and habitat. This area of the website displays projects and efforts to enhance the place or environment where a plant or animal naturally or normally lives and grows. Annual Banquet
Each year Linn County Pheasants Forever has an annual banquet to get fellow pheasant hunters and those in the community to gather together in support of our pheasants. Raising money to help the efforts of conservation and habitat that is related to our pheasant population. As well, educating those new members and or youth in why our Pheasants Forever Chapter is important to the sport in our communities.
Monthly Meetings
Join us for our monthly meetings. The Linn County Pheasants Forever would like to invite all members to attend these meetings. We discuss local habitat projects, youth events, annual banquet or other items related to Pheasants Forever and our local community in Iowa. We meet the first Wednesday of each month at Nasso's in Marion.
Member Hunts
Forming bonds and friendships in the field, all in the efforts of conservation. From time to time we have members getting together as a group to hunt some pheasants in our great state of Iowa. Wild Game Dinners
A Wild Game Dinner (or game feed) features game or quarry is any animal hunted for sport or for food. The type and range of animals hunted for food in Iowa can include (and is not limited to): pheasant, quail, chukar, dove, rabbit, squirrel, duck, goose, deer, etc. In some cases local game feeds may include game from different parts of the world. A wild game feed may also include activities such as: - A live auctions - Silent auctions - Raffles - Education
